Update as of Monday, January 16:

Per investigators, Miles has admitted to providing the gun that was fired in the deadly shooting. However, the other suspect is the one who fired the weapon that claimed the life of Jamea Harris.

“While Darius has been accused of being involved with this tragedy, he maintains his innocence and looks forward to his day in court,” stated Miles’ defense lawyers, William White, Clayton Tartt and Suzanne Norman. “Our firm’s own investigation is ongoing, and no further statement will be made at this time.”

Original story:

Alabama’s Darius Miles is one of two men being charged with capital murder. Miles is in connection to an early morning shooting that took place near campus, ending in that fatality of a 23-year-old woman.

Miles, a junior guard for Roll Tide, is no longer on the team after being booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

“At this time, it appears that the only motive was a minor altercation that these individuals had with the victim as they were out on The Strip,” stated Tuscaloosa Police Capt. Jack Kennedy in a news conference Sunday evening.

According to Kennedy, the capital murder charge arose due to shots being fired inside a vehicle with the death. Michael Davis is the other man being charged with Miles.

“The University of Alabama’s utmost priority is the safety and well-being of the campus community,” the university statement read. “We are grieved by the incident that occurred near campus last night and extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends.”

Per reports, Harris was a passenger in a car that had approached campus near the Bryant-Denny Stadium shortly before 2 a.m. EST where shots were fired from that car which Harris returned fire. At this moment, Kennedy has not released the name of a suspect that was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, nor disclosed whose gun killed the woman victim.

Prior to Alabama’s game against LSU this weekend, Miles was listed as out with an ankle injury – he has now been removed from the school website. The junior only appeared in six games this season for Roll Tide, with his most recent game being Dec. 20, 2022 which he chipped in with two points in Alabama’s victory over Jackson State.
