Following weeks of viral public scrutiny, James Spears has agreed to step down from his position as sole conservator for his daughter Britney Spears. Suffering as a silent victim for years, Britney finally broke the silence on her abuse regarding financial guardianship by her father. It took little time before she had massive backing creating the ‘Free Britney’ movement.

Tensions in the Spears family are at an all-time high with the legal battle just beginning and having no established timeline for an end. Even Lynne Spears, Britney’s mother, has cast her voice in to back Britney and slander her ex-husband’s narcissistically controlling ways. Her words were impactful enough that Jame’s lawyers threw a stone back making a public rebuttal claiming that Lynne has been absent from Britney’s life for over a decade and should only be thanking James for his years of care for their daughter.

Mathew Rosengart has taken on the case for Britney, representing her and filed the petition that would allow a new conservator. He moved to have Jason Rubin replace her father as a more competent and interest-appropriate conservator. Rubin is a principal at a firm with experience in estate financial management, elder financial abuse investigation, investment fraud investigation, and securities litigation. Despite the paramount win in removing James, the injustice of James’ acts will be thoroughly followed up by investigations.

“We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed. It is vindication for Britney. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others,” Britney’s lawyer Mathew Rosengart stated.

For the past 13 years and with assets worth over $50 million dollars, Britney has struggled under the conservatorship of her father. The shock of her tell-all was so powerful, it has prompted Congress to draft a bill that will allow those under conservatorships to ask for a public guardian who is “free from financial conflicts of interest”.

Though the bill has not yet passed, it would protect millions of Americans from similar situations. The light Britney’s case has brought on the flawed parameters of a conservatorship is beyond just rich-people-problems but is now being exposed as a foundational civil rights problem.
