Mexican soccer player Jonathan Suárez, who recently signed with the Orlando City SC, was arrested. Suárez was also arrested along with his brother, Rafael Suárez, after being denounced for an alleged sexual assault in central Florida. After being arrested, the league also suspended Suárez.
“Late Tuesday night, Orlando City SC became aware that defender Jonathan Suárez was arrested in Osceola County. The club takes these allegations very seriously and is currently gathering more information. No further comment will be provided by the club until additional investigation of the alleged incident is complete.”
Suárez and his brother were arrested Tuesday night and are being held in an Osceola jail on charges of sexual assault, the sheriff’s office in city of Orlando reported today.
According to the authorities, the arrest was based on a woman’s complaint, accusing both men of sexually assaulting her last Sunday afternoon and after investigating the evidence provided by the victim.
Detectives from the police unit interviewed the woman on Monday afternoon and 24 hours later proceeded to detain the Suárez brothers who have not received bail. Major League Soccer (MLS) announced this Wednesday the suspension of the 24-year-old player, who arrived at the Orlando club this year as a loan from Querétaro FC.
In addition, the league stated it would remain in close communication with Orlando City SC, local law enforcement, and the MLS Players Association during this investigation. the club said in a written statement that it has taken these accusations “very seriously” and is gathering information, but does not comment on the fact until the investigation is complete.
