In a tale of redemption woven with threads of determination, the South Carolina Gamecocks transformed their narrative from heartbreak to historic triumph. Just a year removed from a devastating Final Four loss that shattered dreams of an immaculate season and a national title, they emerged victorious, etching their names into the annals of women’s NCAA tournament history.

On a Sunday filled with anticipation, South Carolina soared past the Iowa Hawkeyes with an electrifying 87-75 victory in the championship game, marking their ascent as the 10th team in Division I history to achieve the pinnacle of perfection with an undefeated season (38-0). They now stand shoulder to shoulder with legendary programs like UConn, Baylor, Tennessee, and Texas, who have also scaled this summit of excellence.

This victory not only secured South Carolina’s third national crown but also solidified their legacy as the new dynasty of women’s college basketball. Under the guidance of Coach Dawn Staley—a beacon of resilience and former player who herself came tantalizingly close to this glory—the Gamecocks have shown what’s possible when youth, belief, and unity forge an unbreakable bond.

“We serve an unbelievable God – uncommon favor. It’s awesome. It’s unbelievable,” exclaimed Staley, celebrating the fulfillment of a shared dream and a historic achievement.

Kamilla Cardoso, shining bright as the Final Four Most Outstanding Player and on the cusp of her WNBA journey, dazzled with 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, showcasing a performance for the ages. The Gamecocks, with a relentless spirit, dominated the boards and outrebounded the Hawkeyes, setting the stage for a triumphant finale.

The Road to Victory: Iowa vs South Carolina

Early in the first quarter, South Carolina really struggle early on, in a way that they haven’t had all season. Iowa and Clark were clicking on all cylinders, and it look liked early on, the Gamecocks were struggling to meet the moment. And while South Carolina has looked untouchable for the most part, they were only up 49-46.

As the second half unfolded, the intensity on the court reached fever pitch. Iowa, refusing to go down without a fight, rallied behind Clark’s heroic efforts. However, every time the Hawkeyes threatened to close the gap, South Carolina had an answer. Whether it was a crucial three-pointer, a timely steal, or a defensive stop, the Gamecocks found ways to maintain their lead.

A Coach’s Vision Realized

Much of South Carolina’s success can be attributed to the visionary leadership of coach Dawn Staley. Known for her tactical acumen and ability to inspire her players, Staley’s game plan against Iowa was nothing short of brilliant.

Staley’s emphasis on a collective effort and her ability to make real-time adjustments played a crucial role in South Carolina’s triumph. “They weren’t going to be denied,” Staley said. “It doesn’t always end like you want it to end. I’m just super proud of where I work. It’s unbelievable.

Historic Achievement: Undefeated Champions

With this victory, South Carolina not only captures their third national championship but also completes an unprecedented perfect season. This remarkable achievement places them among the elite teams in college basketball history. The Gamecocks’ journey to this point has been characterized by dominating performances, unwavering focus, growth and a deep-seated belief in their ability to overcome any challenge.

Reflecting on the season, Staley said, “To go undefeated and win the national championship is something incredibly special. It speaks volumes about the character and talent of this team. They’ve worked tirelessly, faced every challenge head-on, and today, they’ve reaped the rewards of their hard work.”

A Legacy Cemented

As the celebrations begin and the confetti settles, the impact of South Carolina’s victory extends far beyond the confines of the basketball court. This win is a testament to the power of teamwork, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence. For coach Dawn Staley, her players, and the entire Gamecock community, this national championship is a crowning achievement that will be remembered for generations.

As the sun sets on this monumental day, one thing is clear: the story of how South Carolina beats Iowa to claim the national championship will be told and retold, a timeless tale of triumph, unity, and the indomitable spirit of champions.

Staley Praises Caitlin Clark

In the midst of winning the National Championship, Staley showered praise on the sports brightest star, Caitlin Clark.

“I want to personally thank Caitlin Clark for lifting up our sport,” Staley said. “She carried a heavy load for our sport and it’s just not going to stop here on the collegiate tour, but when she is the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, she’s going to lift up that league up as well.

“Caitlin Clark, if you’re out there, you are one of the GOATs of our game and we appreciate you.”

“I think anytime someone like coach Staley is able to recognize you and what you did for the game is pretty special,” Clark said after the game. “Obviously, she’s somebody I respect so much. I respect what she’s done for South Carolina. I respect what she did as a player for our game. Anytime you can get the praises of her is pretty special, so that means a lot.”
