The documentary film From the Hood to the Holler is just what it sounds like. This movie goes into depth about the stereotypes, secrets, and truths about Kentucky. Charles Booker, a political activist, works to unite people of all social and economic backgrounds while fighting against big money in politics, voter suppression, and systematic corruption.
Viewers follow Booker’s campaign journey from the most urban settings to the most rural enviornments. Booker and his team rewrite the campaign settings while fighting for change. Kentucky went through a series of unfortunate events including Covid-19 but also the death of Breonna Taylor. What many might know though, is Kentucky is one of the worst places in the US for access to clean water, education, and healthcare.
For Booker, his fight for change is documented in From the Hood to the Holler to make a difference in Kentucky.
It’s ironic that a state with some of the most disenfranchised people is represented by one of the most powerful politicians in the country: Mitch McConnell. Running in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by Mitch McConnell, Booker attempts one of the biggest upsets in political history by challenging establishment-backed candidate Amy McGrath. Booker makes it known that no matter where you are from or who you are, you can make a change. He is just a “regular guy” fighting for what he truly believes in. He makes it possible for people to believe that good is coming.
As I watch From the Hood to the Holler, I could see how Booker was making people rethink their vote against McGrath. He was gaining so much support from everyone around him. The change felt like it was currently happening. That he was making it happen. Not just change for the communities within Kentucky, but the whole world.
This film really proves that no matter who you are, or where you are from, you can make a change, speak up, and stand up for what you believe in. His message is so inspiring, whether you are from the city “hood” — like Booker, or the Appalachian “holler”, you are seen. The world is bigger than anyone has seen.
Overall, From the Hood to the Holler has changed the game and shows a completely different side of how a campaign can be held. Make sure you go watch the film which is in select theaters in New York, Los Angeles, and digital platforms on Sept 30.
