Update as of Jan. 6 at 5 p.m ET

After a tight race, Democrat Jon Ossoff has won the second senate chair in Georgia. Ossoff defeated Republican David Perdue.

“It is with humility that I thank the people of Georgia for electing me to serve you in the United States Senate,” Ossoff shared.

Joining Warnock with a win, the Democrats have now gained control of the Senate. In addition, Ossoff will become the first Jewish Senator, as well as, the youngest to hold the position (he’s 33-years old). Warnock and Ossoff are the first Democrats to win Senate seats in Georgia since 2000.

Once Warnock takes office, his term will last for two years. For Ossoff, he has a full six-year term in the Senate.

History was made late Tuesday night going into Wednesday. In Georgia’s Senate runoff, Democratic candidate Reverend Raphael Warnock has beat Republican GOP Senate candidate Kelly Loeffler for one of the chairs in the Senate.

With the victory, Warnock will become the first Black senator in the state of Georgia. Furthermore, he is the first Georgia Democrat elected to the Senate in 20 years.

Warnock shared the following remarks after learning of the victory:

“I come before you as a proud American and a son of Georgia.

My roots are planted deeply in Georgia soil.

…So, I stand before you as a man who knows that the improbable journey that led me to this place in this historic moment in America could only happen here.

We were told we couldn’t win this election, but tonight we proved that, with hope, hard work and the people by our side, ANYTHING is possible.

I am so honored by the faith that you have shown in me, and I promise you this: I am going to the Senate to work for Georgia, all of Georgia, no matter who you cast your vote for in this election.

In this moment in American history, Washington has a choice to make, we all have a choice to make.
