Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is working on finalizing a supermaximum contract extension with the franchise.

The deal is reportedly a five-year, $228.2 million dollar deal, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. This will be the largest deal in NBA history. In addition, the Greek Freak will be able to opt out of the deal in 2025.

Antetokounmpo had a year for the ages last season. He’s coming off his best season where he averaged career highs in both points (29.5) and rebounds (13.6).

Milwaukee can now breathe a bit easier after locking up their franchise centerpiece. The two-time Most Valuable Player had until Dec. 21 to sign the supermax with the Bucks. He could’ve elected to wait until the summer of 2021 to sign a new deal if he had chosen to stay with the franchise but test the waters as an unrestricted free agent.

The 26-year-old star has joined former Bucks’ great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James as the only players to win multiple NBA MVP awards by age 25. In addition, is the first Bucks player since Abdul-Jabbar to win the award while leading the team to its first playoff-series win since 2001.

In addition, is the third player in league history to win MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season, joining Hall of Famers Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon.

In addition, in a year where teams were cleaning house to open up cap room for one of the league’s brightest stars. The state of Wisconsin is lucky that a player of his caliber, elect to stay with the team that drafted him.

“This is my home, this is my city,” said Antetokoumpo in a statement. “I’m blessed to be able to be a part of the Milwaukee Bucks for the next 5 years. Let’s make these years count. The show goes on, let’s get it.”
