US makes offer for Brittney Griner’s release

The trial for Brittney Griner is still going on in Russia. Today, the Biden Administration announced it has offered a deal to Russia to bring her home, per reports. The deal also includes Paul Whelan, who is another American detained there.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the news this morning and also mentioned he expects to converse with his Kremlin counterpart for the first time since Ukraine was invaded by Russia.

Blinken is seeking to have a call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

While this is the first time the government has made a public announcement on the concrete action to bring Griner home, Blinken didn’t share any details about the potential deal.

For years, Russia has been seeking the release of a Russian arms dealer, Viktor Bout. Bout was sentenced to 25 years in prison for charges surrounding him scheming to illegally sell millions of dollars in weapons.

More details are to come as the story develops.
