RALEIGH – Joanne P. McCallum resigned from her post as Duke University’s women’s basketball coach Thursday morning.
McCallie, who finished with a 330-107 record at the school, explained that the main reasoning behind her departure was due to uncertainty about a contract extension.
“As a coach in the final year of my contract, uncertainty is natural and it takes away from confidence and fun,” McCallie said on the team’s Twitter account. “I’m pretty sure there’s a level of uncertainty amongst the Duke family. I want to bring clarity with great pride for all.”
In McCallie’s 13-year tenure at the school, she led the Blue Devils to three ACC championships and reached the NCAA Regional Finals in four straight years (2010-2013) but failed to reach the Final Four.
After Duke missed the NCAA tournament for the first time in 22 years (2015-16), the school opened up an internal investigation into allegations of mistreating players. While the investigation found no wrongdoing, McCallie wasn’t given an immediate extension.
Duke Vice President and Director of Athletics Kevin White praised McCallie’s accomplishments and contributions to the university in a press release early Thursday morning.
“Here at Duke, Joanne’s extraordinary passion for excellence produced championship-level success and provided many timeless, captivating moments for both our student-athletes and fans,” White said. “To be sure, Joanne’s unwavering commitment to leadership and service has had an enormous impact on the development of countless young women over the past three decades.”
Overall, McCallie was 646-255 in her 28-year career, which included stops at Maine and Michigan State. As head coach, McCallie led her teams to a combined 21 NCAA tournament appearances while winning nine conference championships. McCallie was also named Coach of the Year six times in her career (2x North Atlantic, 1x America East, 1x Big Ten, 2x ACC).
Duke has announced that they will be opening an immediate national search for McCallie’s replacement.
