In the world of college football, upsets can send shockwaves through the entire sport. Such was the case when Northern Illinois stunned Notre Dame in a thrilling, nail-biting game that left fans and pundits alike in disbelief.
The Huskies’ victory over the Fighting Irish wasn’t just a win; it was a seismic event that shook the foundations of college football rankings and expectations. This unexpected triumph has become a talking point for sports enthusiasts across the nation, sparking debates about the unpredictable nature of the season.

The Upset: NIU’s Historic Victory

This historic achievement also made Northern Illinois the first Mid-American Conference team to defeat an Associated Press top-five ranked team .

The game-winning moment came when Kanon Woodill split the uprights with a 35-yard field goal, giving NIU a 16-14 lead with just 31 seconds left on the clock . The Huskies’ defense sealed the deal as Cade Haberman blocked Notre Dame’s desperate 62-yard field goal attempt as time expired .

NIU’s balanced offense played a crucial role in the upset, outgaining Notre Dame 388-286 in total yards . Antario Brown showcased his versatility with an impressive 225 total yards, including 126 receiving and 99 rushing . Quarterback Ethan Hampton contributed significantly, completing 10 of 19 passes for 198 yards and a touchdown .

Game-Changing Moments

The clash between Northern Illinois and Notre Dame was filled with pivotal moments that shaped the outcome. One such moment came when Amariyun Knighten intercepted a pass and returned it 33 yards to the 50-yard line with just under 6 minutes left in the game . This turnover set the stage for the Huskies’ final drive.

Quarterback Ethan Hampton’s clutch performance was crucial. He converted a fourth-and-2 with a 3-yard run to the Notre Dame 28, keeping the drive alive . This set up Kanon Woodill’s game-winning 35-yard field goal with 31 seconds remaining, giving Northern Illinois a 16-14 lead .

The final dramatic moment unfolded as Notre Dame attempted a desperate 62-yard field goal. Cade Haberman, who had already blocked a 48-yard attempt earlier, rose to the occasion once again. He blocked the long-range kick as time expired, sealing the Huskies’ historic upset .

The loss to Northern Illinois has dealt a severe blow to Notre Dame’s College Football Playoff aspirations. The Fighting Irish saw their playoff chances plummet from 73% to 41% immediately after the game. This unexpected setback has exposed glaring weaknesses in Notre Dame’s offense, particularly in the passing game.

Quarterback Riley Leonard’s performance has been underwhelming, completing just 20 of 32 passes for 163 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions against Northern Illinois. The offense’s struggles have raised concerns about the team’s ability to compete at the highest level this season.

While this upset was the talk of the day, the postgame speech by head coach Thomas Hammock was the talk of the year!
