The time has come for Sue Bird to put away her playing shoes. The Seattle Storm star point guard has announced she is retiring at the conclusion of the 2022 WNBA season.

Bird has been with the Storm all 21 years that she has been in the league — she was the No. 1 overall pick in 2002 out of UConn.

Since joining Seattle, Bird has been a key reason why the franchise has four WNBA titles. Furthermore, with plenty of games left this season, she can get even more assists to add to her league-leading all-time assists leader tally. In addition, she has helped Team USA win five gold medals in the Olympics. While donning the blue for the UConn Huskies, she also was a two-time NCAA champion.

Last season the Storm starting point guard wanted to retire, but fans chanted “one more year!” at the end of their last game against Phoenix. She listened and signed a one-year deal. But now, she stated this would be her last trip to New York when the Storm plays the Liberty on Sunday. For local fans, it’s the perfect opportunity to grab their tickets to the game because the game will be 30 miles from Syosset, NY — the city she grew up in.
