West Virginia assistant coach Nitra Perry, who is in her second year with the Mountaineers, has been named the interim head coach, sources tell The Ball Out. Perry will take over after Mike Carey announced his retirement. Furthermore, Perry will become the first Black women head coach in the Big 12.

Before coming to West Virginia, Perry had various stops as an assistant or associate coach (Toledo, Memphis, Mississippi State) but was the head coach at Kennesaw State. With the Owls, Perry holds the record for the most wins in a single season on the Division I level.

Perry also was a four-year letter winner for Mississippi State, where she was a two-time All-SEC honorable mention her junior and senior years. In scoring and rebounding, Perry still ranks in the top 20 of the Bulldogs’ career charts. Behind her play, Perry led Mississippi State to three-straight postseason appearances — two NCAA tournament trips.
