At Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, Abby Zwerner, suffered life-threatening injuries after being shot by a handgun which was in the possession of a six-year-old student. However, Zwerner is making improvement and is in a stable condition.
At the time of this report, it is unclear how the young minor had the gun or how the gun bypassed the metal detectors. Local police have not stated what the motivation was behind the shooting. Chief Steve Drew has stated that there was an “altercation” that occurred in the classroom.
“We don’t have all the answers about how a six-year-old was able to handle a firearm or how a six-year-old was able to access a firearm,” stated Major Jones. “This is a dark day in our history and I think this is a red flag for the country.”
According to one child’s parent, Steve Gonzalez, he stated his child recalled Zwerner screaming for the “kids to run away” after she was shot.
No students were injured during the shooting. The six-old is in police custody.
More details are to come as the story develops.
