Mississippi State hires Sam Purcell; Smesko chooses to stay at FGCU

After conducting a national search, Mississippi State has named Sam Purcell its next head coach.

Purcell comes to Mississippi State after serving as an assistant coach at Lousiville since 2013. Since 2017, Purcell has been Jeff Waltz’s associate coach.

Mississippi State did reach out to Karl Smesko to gauge his interest, but Smesko opted to stay at FGCU.
