Pokey Chatman has interviewed for the coaching vacancy with the Phoenix Mercury, multiple sources tell The Ball Out. Earlier this month, Phoenix and former head coach Sandy Brondello parted ways.
Chatman has coached in the WNBA before with stops in Chicago and Indiana. Before coaching in the WNBA, she coached at Louisiana State University (LSU). With the Sky, she led the franchise to its first playoff appearance in 2013. The following season, Chatman led Chicago to the WNBA Finals. She has proven to be a winner internationally with two championships in the EuroLeague with Spartak Moscow, where she coached Diana Taurasi for four years.
Chatman is widely regarded as one of the best basketball minds in basketball, along with her unique ability to connect with players. So many of the best players in the WNBA have high regard for Chatman, whether it’s Sylvia Fowles, Courtney Vandersloot, recently retired Seimone Augustus, Sue Bird, Lauren Jackson and more.
Latricia Trammell and Chasity Melvin have also interviewed with the Mercury. Trammell has been an assistant with the LA Sparks, who has been in the WNBA since 2017. As for Melvin, she is an assistant with the Mercury.
