Naya Rivera, the actress who played Santana López on the hit television series ‘Glee’, died in July. Rivera drowned in Lake Piru, near Los Angeles, California while swimming with her son. Now, her ex-husband Ryan Dorsey filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of their five-year-old, Josey.

The father of the minor initiated the legal process against the county of Ventura in California. The United Water district and the Department of Parks and Recreation of the area are who Dorsey attributes the responsibility of wrongful death and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

According to the lawsuit, Dorsey states the boat was “not equipped with a safely accessible ladder, adequate rope, an anchor, a radio or any security mechanisms to prevent swimmers from being separated from their boats, nor any flotation or lifesaving devices.”

Investigations revealed that at the time of the incident, the rented boat did not meet the Coast Guard’s safety standard, so Dorsey decided to initiate legal action. Rivera and Dorsey were separated at the time of her death, however, the two maintained a good relationship.

The family also released a statement at the end of the investigation.

“We extend our infinite gratitude and ovation to the heroine who found her. Thank you to your friends, colleagues, and fans for your continued support. Heaven has won our angel. We kindly request that our privacy be respected during this difficult time,” they commented.
