Los Angeles, CA– Bohemian Rhapsody and Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse heard the booming sound of applause at the Westin Bonaventure Sunday night, winning big at the 66th annual Golden Reel Awards.
Recognized by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE), the films took home two awards each: Bohemian Rhapsody for Dialogue/ADR and Musical and Spider-Man for Feature Animation and Music Underscore for a Feature Film.
The pair were among winners in 23 sound categories including feature films, long-form and short-form television, animation, documentaries, games, special venue and other media.
“We are storytellers who serve filmmakers and producers by creating immersive audio experiences that wrap audiences in visual landscapes on screen around the world,” said MPSE President Tom McCarthy. “We celebrate the creation of entertainment content that people will enjoy for generations to come as new formats appear and new ways to distribute content are developed.”
In addition to the category honors, special awards presented included the Career Achievement Award to Stephen H. Flick and the Filmmaker Award to Antoine Fuqua.
“Antoine’s work is being honored tonight for his original, unique voice, especially for his advanced and dynamic use of sound,” said presenter and fellow filmmaker Michael Mann. “His work bears a unique signature, compelling characters right in the storyline, shooting with a magical flow and a dynamic tapestry of sound.”
Fuqua, who began his career as a music video director, is best known for his action and thriller films including The Equalizer series, Olympus Has Fallen and the Academy Award-winning film Training Day.
“Whatever success I have, I cannot do without the talented editors and sound mixers that are in this room tonight,” said Fuqua. “More often than not, the movie stars and directors get much of the credit for the success of the films, and too often a lot of the professionals in this room who do the hard work in the dark are overlooked, but not tonight.”
Founded in 1953, the MPSE is dedicated to improving the recognition of its members by educating the public about the artistic merit of sound editing. For more information visit mpse.org.
