Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris were shown for the first time together in Wilmington, Del., Biden’s home, to launch the formula with which Democrats hope to defeat President Donald Trump in the November presidential election.
Both dressed in blue, Biden and Harris gave each other praise and smiles and offered flashes of chemistry by promising a progressive government, dedicated to the people, and launching fierce criticism of Trump, calling for an epic-tinged battle to banish him from the White House.
Biden again called for a “battle for the soul of the nation,” and Harris called for a “new coalition of conscience,” a reference to the civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s.
“We are at one of those turning points in our history,” Biden said. “A life-changing choice for our nation. And the choice we make this November will decide America’s future for a long time to come. I had great options. But I have no doubt about it that the right person to join me as the next Vice President of the United States is Senator Kamala Harris, “Biden said.
The brand-new presentation of the Biden-Harris formula – the third in the history of the United States with a mixed ticket (2008 – John McCain and Sarah Palin; 2016 Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine) – was made in an environment consistent with the coronavirus pandemic: without an audience, without the pomp or traditional aesthetics of other presidential campaigns and in an empty indoor stadium of Alexis I. duPont High School before a handful of journalists, cameramen and photographers, and the campaign team. Biden and Harris were accompanied by their partners, Jill Biden and Douglas Emhoff.
Finally, in a passage in his speech, Biden referenced Trump’s reaction to Harris’s candidacy announcement. Specifically, he spoke on how the fact Trump called her “obscene”, “mean” and “disrespectful”, especially due to her incisive questioning of Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court in 2018.
“It’s no surprise, because whining is what Donald Trump does best. Better than any president in American history,” Biden said. “Is anyone surprised Donald Trump has a problem with a strong woman or strong women across the board? We know that more is to come.”
