Original story:
Tyre Nichols died earlier this month following a traffic stop by police in Memphis. Nichols was beaten by five police officers and taken to the hospital, where he died from the injuries sustained during that traffic stop on January 7.
Initial reports indicated Nichols ran during a reckless driving stop which created a “confrontation” as officers tried to detain him. Memphis police Chief Cerelyn Davis said there is an investigation. Furthermore, Davis stated the review of body cam footage couldn’t “substantiate” the reckless driving claim.
The city of Memphis is preparing for a protest to encounter as it is expected for the public to see the footage from the beating.
Charges have already been announced for the five officers – a move Attorney Ben Crump said is showing justice considering the charges came 20 days after the incident and not months.
“We have never seen swift justice like this,” Crump said.
Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith were all fired for their involvement. The five officers were fired for misconduct and were arrested yesterday after being indicted.
In addition, the former cops are each being charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of official misconduct, and official oppression.
