Mark Emmert announced today he will no longer be the president of the NCAA. Emmert will continue to serve as president until either June 30, 2023, or when the NCAA hires a new president.

“Today, NCAA Board of Governors Chair John J. DeGioia announced by mutual agreement with the board that Mark Emmert will be stepping down as president of the NCAA,” the statement read. “He will continue to serve in his role until a new president is selected and in place or until June 30, 2023.”

Emmert has been the NCAA’s president since 2010. He became the NCAA’s president after serving as the president at the University of Washington and the chancellor at Louisiana State University.

“Throughout my tenure I’ve emphasized the need to focus on the experience and priorities of student-athletes,” Emmert shared in a statement. “I am extremely proud of the work of the Association over the last 12 years and especially pleased with the hard work and dedication of the national office staff here in Indianapolis.”

The news is shocking considering last April, the NCAA gave Emmert a contract extension through 2025.
